A few years earlier, when he was leading the Army of the Potomac, McClellan was popular among his soldiers at least. This would change when he was nominated to run against “Old Abe,” but with the advantages of today’s technology, it would make sense for pro-McClellan ads to focus on his service and the affection of those who served under his command.
