Although President Lincoln had removed him from the front lines, General McClellan maintained his titles and position in the military until after the election of 1864. A few years earlier, when he was leading the Army of the Potomac, McClellan was popular among his soldiers at least. This would change when he was nominated to run against “Old Abe,” but with the advantages of today’s technology, it would make sense for pro-McClellan ads to focus on his service and the affection of those who served under his command.
